Wondeful and hard climb of 21 km with 1700 meters of drop from Ardenno-Masino , av 8 % (but last 12 km from Filorera av is 9,5 % ) - max 19 % in a cement part and before a tunnel (press button x light ).
Traffic very poor, tarmac not perfect.
Is a very hard climb , no one meter of flat.
You go up the Sasso Bisolo valley, leaving the Masino valley. After Valbiore, you arrive at Alpe Scotti (with refuge) and then you go along numerous hairpin bends between pine and fir trees.
Suddenly you come out at about 2000 meters in the vast Piana di Preda Rossa, dominated by the famous Monte Disgrazia 3678 m high.
In the 60s a dam for the production of electricity should have been built; the road was built especially for this, between 1962 and 1969.
The dam project was later abandoned.
The cemented part and the tunnel were built after a landslide which forced the road to be moved to the opposite side.
Preda Rossa is a jewel of the Alps.
