ITA-362 - Castello di Canossa

REPETTI M A U R O - 25-11-2023:
Climbed black side from San Polo d'Enza (prov Reggio Emilia) in a sunny, hot and humid day.
It is a discontinuous climb, to be divided in four parts :
first hard, second easier, third hard, fourth easier.
The 2 hard parts - max 13% - are full of beautiful hairpins (15 in total);
the 2 easy parts are almost flat with also some meters of descent ( I reached 50 km speed easy ).
Road is quite narrow along the entire slope and the asphalt is typical of the Apennines, quite bumpy and full of cracks.
Very little the traffic on this climb, many farms on the way up.
Last 100 meters are steep and bring you to the bottom of the castle, famous for having hosted in 1077 the historic meeting between Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII which lifted him from excommunication, in the presence of Countess Matilda di Canossa, one of the main protagonists of the struggle between the papacy and the empire.
You can reach the top of the castle walking along a staircase (with the bike you can reach only the entrance, 50 mt on cobbled).
Near top worth a visit the CALANCHI , a geomorphological erosion of the soil that is produced by the washing effect of rainwater on clayey rocks ; looks like a gully amphitheater, formed over the centuries.
