Stanage Edge, the long rocky outcrop just north of the top of the climb, and overshadowing it, is the largest and most impressive of the Peak District's gritstone edges and is visible from far down below in the Hope Valley. Stanage literally means 'stone edge' and it's 3.5 miles long from its northern tip to the southern point near the Cowper Stone. the highest point (off road!) is High Neb at a height of 1500 feet +. (458 metres). in winter it's usually snowbound. in better weather it's an ideal spot for climbing with its sheer cliffs. some of these are 25 metres high. more challenging sections have names such as The Marble Wall, The Tower, Black Hawk and Robin Hood's Cave. in Victorian times climbers had to bribe local gamekeepers to get access to the high ground. a paved packhorse route originally ran along the top of the ridge and walking up there some of it it can still be traced
