Where to locate a foot ?
In a village or a well defined place, where naturally the climb begins. But a climb is not always simple, like leaving a valley and reaching the summit in one step.
We must avoid 3 difficulties called "2in1"
1) If 2 different climbs have a common section, they cannot keep both this common section. The most difficult climb keeps this common section in its track and the other one only keeps its final own section.
2) If an intermediate downhill exists between 2 climbs, we have a rule with calculations, deciding if the total track is only 1 climb or if we divide the track into different 2 climbs. The rule is simple : to keep only one ascent, the length of the downhill sector must be less than a third of the total length of the ascent and the negative vertical drop of the downhill sector must be less than a third of the total positive vertical drop of the ascent. Otherwise, there will be two separate climbs.
3) If 2 climbs are in the same area with a defined summit and that a kind of plateau or false flat rideable road can join the 2 climbs passing by an higher place than the 2 existing summits, we locate the summit of the 2 in the highest place. Those 2 climbs become sides of a same summit. Restriction : the additional road cannot be too long not more than a third of the initial climb.
