CHE-250 - Torrazza di Novazzano CM1971 & 2009

REPETTI M A U R O - 01-01-2024:
Via Torraccia (or Torrazza) leads to Novazzano with its 2 km (from Chiasso) and was theater of World Championship in 1971 - with protagonists the Belgian Eddy Merckx and the Italian Felice Gimondi who, paired throughout the race, found themselves fighting alone for the final victory. Gimondi tried to surprise Merckx, but the Belgian's superiority in the sprint allowed him to win his second world gold -
and WC 2009 (won by Cadel Evans)
The average gradient is 6.5%, the maximum is 10-12%, reached in the 1st km.
The road is very wide and this tends to deceive the eye (but not the legs), which does not notice the gradient.
Climb under sun, the shadow appears only in the 300 meters of the Novazzano crossing, characterized - while the gradients drop a bit (6%) - by a significant narrowing of the roadway.
You return to the sunlight in the 400 meters before the top of the hill, located at 376 mt, recognizable by the presence, on the right, of the Casa Girotondo, a characteristic rounded red brick building .
