Please do not stop at the highest point of the main road (as indicated here) but take the gravel road on the left a little bit further and climb to the Grosser Beerberg - the road reach the highest point of the Rennsteig at 973m - The Rennsteig trail runs along a ridgeway through the uplands of the Thuringian Forest over 170 km
