When climbing Stoss from Altstaetten (East side), I recommend to use the old road ('Alte Stossstrasse'), although our map shows the main/new road. The old road offers nice scenery, is more challenging with sections above 20%, and doesn't suffer from heavy traffic until it joins the new road. In the center of Altstaetten, follow the signs to Schuetzenhaus / Alter Zoll. See also www.quaeldich.de (in German).
