90 - Mam Tor

SPEED Kevin - 11-04-2021:
Winnats Pass to Mam Tor from Castleton in the east https://www.strava.com/activities/4963492916

Mam Tor is known as 'Mother Mountain' because of its softly rounded contours. It's formed from an unstable mix of sandstone and shale. the entire hill is gradually slipping into the valley giving the peak its other name of 'Shivering Mountain' . the old main road from Manchester to Sheffield was forced to close in 1979 due to this slippage. I remember it as I cycled the old road first in 1978 when I was 17 !
