1924 - Tzomtehuitz

SCHOOT Hugo - 29-11-2013:
Tzomtehuitz is one of the peaks surrounding the beautiful colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas which is located in the Southern state Chiapas.
You need three things to climb it:
1) a good MTB. Most of the road is unpaved with rocks. Renting a bike is no problem because there is a good bike rental in the city. Google jaguar adventures.
2) a GPS. There are several ways to the top but it is not easy to find the right one. At least not when I did the climb because it was rainy and cloudy and the top was notvisible
3) good legs. Unfortunately my shape end November was not so good anymore so I had to stop several times at the steepest parts which exceeded regularly 30 degrees . In my defence the road was slippery with rain and pebbles and the high altitude of almost 3000 m also doesn't help.

I started off on the paved main road to the South, steady climbing but not difficult . After about 7 km turn left after a small part downhill and then the real steep part starts. Riding through mais fields and small Indian settlements was really fantastic. Came through a beautiful valley with bright white flowers along the little river (wilde aronskelken) which relieved the pain a bit and gave me a good reason to stop to take pictures. About 5 km under the top somebody has had a great (?) idea to make a shortcut straight up the hill. This part was being paved but I think I never had to go so steep for so long. The good old zigzag trick only helped partially.
On the top there are some tv antennes. Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy the view because of the mist. Going down was cold, wet, bumpy and slippery but what a great afternoon!
Hope someone will follow. Hugo
P.S. Proud to have scored the first BIG in Mexico!
