9 - Guolasjavri

OOSTRA Ard - 26-01-2019:
BIG no. 9 - Guolasjavri
This Norwegian climb starts at sealevel in the village of Birtavarre. The first 10kms are on a fairly flat asphalt road. As soon as the road becomes unpaved the percentages rise abruptly, between 7 and 10% average for the next 5 kilometers. The road has some hairpins and has coarse gravel at some spots. By choosing carefully one's trace to follow, its possible, most of the time to ride on smooth patches of the road, thus enabling to climb Guolasjavri on a road bike. Km 15 and 16 are less steep and from km 17 to 19 percentages increase again. Arrived at an intersection with a closed cattle gate, the cyclist has to turn left (eastwards) if he wants to enjoy the views on the lake. The road is fairly flat but gravel is coarser, being some challenge on a road bike. For the enthusiastic cyclist, the road continues fairly flat for several more kilometers in the direction of the Norwegian-Finnish border with views on Finlands highest summit.
